Unlinked PANs may turn invalid in 2026 as Aadhaar deadline nears
PAN cards not linked with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025 will be rendered inoperative from January 2026, affecting tax filings and key financial transactions.
Taxpayers who have not yet linked their PAN with Aadhaar face the risk of their PAN becoming inoperative from January 1, 2026. As per a government notification issued in April 2025, individuals whose PAN was allotted using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID before October 1, 2024 must complete the linkage by December 31, 2025. Failure to do so will restrict financial and tax-related transactions such as filing returns, opening bank accounts, or conducting high value investments. The Income Tax Department allows PAN Aadhaar linking online via its e-filing portal, through SMS, or at designated service centres, subject to a ₹1,000 penalty for delayed compliance.
