Flood risk fears rise over coal ash storage along Alabama rivers
An environmental report warns Alabama Power’s coal ash ponds near waterways could flood vast areas if dikes fail, intensifying regulatory and legal scrutiny of closure plans.
A new investigative report has raised concerns that coal ash ponds operated by Alabama Power along major waterways could pose severe flooding and contamination risks if containment systems fail. According to the findings, more than 117 million tons of coal ash are stored statewide, much of it near rivers and wetlands. Particular attention has focused on the Plant Barry site near Mobile, where an unlined pond holding over 21 million tons of waste sits behind earthen dikes.
