Wall Street trades flat as investors return to thin post-Christmas session

US stocks traded narrowly mixed in thin post-holiday volumes, while gold and silver rose sharply as investors sought safety outside equities and bonds.
Trading on Wall Street was subdued at the end of the holiday shortened week as investors returned from the Christmas break amid light volumes. Early Friday, the S&P 500 hovered just above flat, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed and the Nasdaq Composite edged slightly lower. With most institutional investors largely done for the year, market moves remained muted. Precious metals outperformed, with silver jumping over 4.5% to $74.88 an ounce and gold gaining 1.1%, supported by safe haven demand and supply constraints.
